About Hypoglycemia
This is a condition where the blood sugar drops too low and it can affect many, especially diabetics who are on some kind of medication or insulin. In most cases however, this is a very temporary condition that needs attention and can be rectified if it is treated at once. The usual remedies are food or protein. It is a condition that people who go on a fast for example can experience and almost immediate relief is felt with food.
What a lot of people mistakenly believe is that one needs to pop a candy into one's mouth in the case of hypoglycemia but this is really just an old wives' tale. The condition usually gets relief with protein and a large dab of peanut butter is more likely to do the job of making you feel normal again than something sweet.
The reasons why hypoglycemia occurs are many. The condition is the very opposite of what diabetes is - one has too much glucose in the blood, the other too little. However, diabetics on some kind of treatment could experience this condition if the medication or insulin they are on works more than it should and their sugar levels fall to such an extent that they need to be looked at. For others, it could be a result of not eating perhaps.
How do you know when you have hypoglycemia? There is a clammy feeling and the person feels like he is going to faint. There is sweating and palpitations with a feeling of anxiety and coldness. This is really a consequence of the brain being starved of its normal glucose content. The person must be given something to eat and like we said, a protein-rich food would be a good choice. Otherwise, there could be chances that the person slips into a coma.
There are times when the symptoms could also be pain in the abdomen, vomiting or extreme hunger. If left untreated, the speech could get slurred, there could be headaches and lethargy before slipping into a coma. A doctor will usually ask for blood tests to be done as well as try and figure out what exactly caused it. Sometimes, hypoglycemia could happen for no rhyme or reason. It is not a condition to be too concerned about because it could happen when someone fasts or isn't getting enough nutrition. If the problem is persistent however, it would be better to get tests done to determine the cause. Very often, even the doctors can't seem to find any real cause and in most cases, it just goes away on its own.
