Preventing Diabetes

Diabetes is one of those conditions that qualifies as a genetic disorder and you will find that very often it runs in certain families. If someone who is closely related to you has diabetes, you must go get your tests done and also get the doctor's advice on how you can prevent the onset of this condition. A couple of blood tests are usually enough to indicate whether you have a predisposition to diabetes or not and after this, you can take certain pre-emptive measures to ensure you don't fall prey to this condition.

In the United States however, the type of diabetes that is becoming an epidemic is the Type II diabetes and this is very often a result of obesity and bad eating habits. Doctors see a parallel between the increasing weight patterns among Americans and the fast increasing numbers of diabetes patients. This seems to be the trend in many countries around the world as well today. There seem to be a large number of people all over the world who are stuffing themselves with food that have a high sugar and carbohydrate content and hardly any nutrients. So it isn't really a person who just eats sweet things that is at danger - it is someone who eats unwisely and puts the pounds on. Staying slim is one of the best ways to keep diabetes at bay.

Even if you are genetically likely to develop diabetes, there's a lot you can do to fight it by maintaining a good weight. Don't let your weight get out of control. To do this, you need to eat sensibly. So stay away from all those unhealthy carbohydrate foods and those sugary ones too. You also need to avoid fats, especially saturated fats. One way to do this is to cut down fast food to a minimum. These foods are high in carbohydrates - the wrong kind - and fats. Like we said, it's not only the sugar that is responsible - it's all those unhealthy carbs and fats. It is good to keep the sugar consumption down to reasonable levels but even more important to have a balanced diet that included nutritious foods. Keeping an eye on the Glycemic Index helps a lot.

Then of course, you need to exercise - not just sporadically but on a regular basis. This helps the sugar levels in the body and the glucose gets eliminated quicker. Once you get into a regular regime, you can keep diabetes away. You also keep your weight at manageable levels so this too helps to prevent diabetes.

So remember the three important things when it comes to preventing the onset of diabetes - exercise, diet and weight. Just a few simple changes to your lifestyle can prove very fortunate in your fight against diabetes.
